It was thought to be a hybrid of Thymus vulgaris (common thyme) and Thymus pulegioides (broad-leaved thyme). However, recent DNA testing has proven lemon thyme to be a separate species and not a hybrid. Despite these new findings, the botanical name for lemon thyme remains Thymus x citriodorus.
